Gary Dunbar grew up near Mount St. Helens before she blew her top and later moved to California’s Santa Clara Valley where he began to dabble with wine grapes. A few years ago, he returned to Southwest Washington and established Morning Star Vineyard near Silver Lake. However, he sources his Malbec from Crawford Vineyard in Prosser, which allowed him to showcase aromas of black raspberry, black currant candy, fig, sweet spices and fresh dill. Inside, there’s beautiful and pure black fruit that leads with black cherry, plum juice, boysenberry and sarsaparilla. Gorgeous balance leads to great length, making for a complete package that merited a gold medal and best of show at the 2016 Capital Food and Wine Festival Wine Competition. Their wines are available at their tasting room in Castle Rock not far from Interstate 5.
