This bottling marks a first for Walla Walla Valley grower/winemaker Jay DeWitt and Dumas Station – a full-on, 100 percent Merlot – and the results from Birch Creek Vineyard and Minnick Hills Vineyard are superb. His program of 40% new oak creates aromas reminiscent of black raspberry jam, black cherry juice, dark chocolate and molasses, backed by a pinch of grilling spices. On the attack, the profile is one of black cherry and blackberry with approachable fine-grained tannins. The back end of shaved dark chocolate and red currant acidity makes for a remarkable and lengthy finish. It’s available at New Seasons Market, Whole Foods, small wine shops, the historic Dayton tasting room and online.
