Mercer Estates 2013 Cavalie Vineyard Block 93 Eagle & Plow Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $100

mercer-estates-cavalie-vineyard-block-93-eagle-&-plow-cabernet-sauvignon-2013-bottlePatriotism runs deep at Mercer Estates, starting with owner Rob Mercer, who reenlisted in the Marine Corps after the 9/11 attacks. His vineyard manager, John Derrick, had a friend who lost his life as a passenger helping to save others on United Flight 93. Upon returning home, Rob and John took 911 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon and created a prized 1-acre parcel within their Cavalie Vineyard. They’ve named it Block 93, and this marks the second commercial vintage for a wine that’s become one of the most heartwarming stories in the Washington state wine industry. Jessica Munnell’s work with those grapes creates aromas of blackberry, cherry and chocolate-covered orange peel, backed by hints of toast, juniper and lavender. The entry brings smooth and vibrant flavors of blackberry, raspberry and baking spices, which lead to a lingering finish of Montmorency cherry. All of the proceeds from this wine go to beneficiaries such as Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, Camp Patriot, Friends of Flight 93 and the New England Center for Homeless Veterans. Expect this bottling to exceed the $12,000 raised last year.
